Brothers in Arms를 개발한 Gearbox Software... 다들 아시죠? Gearbox의 대표인 Randy Pitchford가 Next Generation과의 인터뷰에서 다음과 같은 재미있는 내용을 이야기했습니다.

"We learned recently through the public disclosure of Adrian Carmack's lawsuit against id software. We learned about an offer Activison [sic] made for id software. And this is interesting, because they offered id software $90 million for the Quake and Doom brands. And only $115 for the whole company, including the brands. Which means, in Activision's eyes the value of the company is $25 million, and the value of the brand is $90. That's really interesting when you're thinking about the value of intellectual property."


내용인 즉, id Software와 Adrian Carmack간의 법정 분쟁을 통해 몇가지 이면의 이야기가 드러났는데 그 중 하나가 Activision이 Doom과 Quake의 Brand 입양(?)을 위해 부른 금액이었다고 하는군요.

Activision이 id Software에 Quake와 Doom의 Brand 입양을 위해 부른 금액이 자그만치 8천만불이었답니다. 이는 한화로 하면 87억원이라는 얘기죠. Activision은 id Software의 인수 및 Brand 입양까지 해서 1억1500만불, 즉 1천100억을 불렀답니다. :|

Randy는 회사 가치가 2천500만불, Brand 가치가 9천만불이라는 것에 대해 지적 재산권(intellectual property)의 중요성에 대해 다시 한번 절감했다고 인터뷰에서 밝혔습니다.

개인적으로 Activision이 너무 싸게 부른게 아닌가 싶습니다. 회사의 명성이나 Brand 가치는 둘째치고 개발자들의 명성이나 실력은 거의 상급인데... 아무리 남는 장사하는게 장사꾼의 천성이라지만... id Software가 거절할만하다는게 제 생각입니다.
